It’s been just over a week since we announced the 2024 Goldman Environmental Prize winners, seven ordinary people who took extraordinary actions to protect their environments and communities. Follow along as we reflect on some highlights from a whirlwind two weeks.
The 2024 Goldman Prize Winner Announcement
On Monday, April 29, we announced the 2024 Goldman Prize winners: Nonhle Mbuthuma and Sinegugu Zukulu (South Africa), Alok Shukla (India), Teresa Vicente (Spain), Murrawah Maroochy Johnson (Australia), Andrea Vidaurre (United States), and Marcel Gomes (Brazil). The San Francisco Ceremony
San Francisco City Hall glowed green as some 2,500 people gathered at the Opera House to celebrate the 2024 Goldman Environmental Prize winners. For a second year, the ceremony was hosted by Rue Mapp, founder of Outdoor Afro, an organization dedicated to celebrating Black connections and leadership in nature. Jazz Mafia, a quintessential Bay Area band, also took to the stage. Watch the ceremony livestream on YouTube.
Exploring the Natural Beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area
During their time in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Goldman Prize winners visited the Muir Woods National Monument and the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. Thank you to the teams at the National Parks Service and the Gardens of the Golden Gate for sharing your rich history with us! See more pictures from their excursions on our blog.
The Youth Program
As part of the Goldman Prize Youth Program, more than 100 Bay Area students participated in a fireside chat with Andrea Vidaurre and Sinegugu Zukulu. In a rousing conversation, students asked Andrea and Sinegugu questions about their campaigns and motivations and learned about similarities and differences between the two changemakers.
The Washington, DC, Ceremony
From San Francisco, the Prize winners traveled to Washington, DC, to share their stories with an East Coast audience. The Washington ceremony was hosted by science educator and marine conservationist Danni Washington. While in Washington, Prize winners continued to meet with nonprofits, foundations, and elected officials to share their stories and advance their goals.
