A recent blog entry by the Huffington Post, entitled “Texans Say No to the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline,” features Hilton Kelley and Port Arthur, Texas. Home to some of the largest oil refineries in the world, Port Arthur is set to receive nearly 800,000 barrels of tar sands crude oil daily from the Keystone Pipeline, once it is operable.
Kelley won the Goldman Prize in 2011 for his campaign to bring Port Arthur’s industrial pollution under control. Unchecked air pollution from the refineries has been atrributed to the declining health of the surrounding community, which suffers from high rates of asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory ailments.
“Port Arthur West side community is being disproportionally bombarded as it is with toxic waste. We do not need tar sands coming to our area and increasing the heavy toxins in our environment,” Kelley commented.
